I qualified several years ago at the University of Central Lancashire with a BA Honours degree in Tableware. I have just completed my MA at the same University in Ceramics.

The work I produce is hand made on a wheel, contemporary stoneware and earthenware intended for everyday use. Focus is placed on function, form and surface pattern. I hope to produce an elegant and useable hand thrown, finely turned vessel.

The important inspiration in the design of my work comes in the making process itself. The function of the vessel, the balance when handled is most important to me. I aspire to incorporating traditional skills with practical design. Variation in the design is encouraged, with the result that each piece is completely individual. Valuing the individuality of each piece of work and the practicality, use and utility, so that each piece will work as an independent piece or part of a set.

The inspiration for my glazes expresses the movement in the seasons, along with hot and sunny summer days walking along the beach.

The form, function and aesthetic significance of the work places it in the context of today - progressive and challenging. We all need vessels; they are useful, so why not make them as beautiful as possible. And if something is beautiful it stands in its own right. I hope to make vessels that communicate. Designed to give pleasure in daily use.

I also work in slip cast porcelain in a sculptural form. Using the saggared method of firing giving each piece individuality in colour all of its own.

I have recently become interested in the possibility of taking my work further by introducing overglaze to my sculptural pieces. I attend china painting classes in Southport which I am enjoying very much.

I have introduced both clay and china painting into my nursery school, where we allow children from ages 2 – 4 years to “ have a go” at art techniques not usually available to that age range.

I am an active member of Northern Potters and exhibit my work throughout Great Britain.
